About Debbie Miller

I am one of those people – on the playground, I was the girl hearing the whispered confidences of my classmates. On public transportation, strangers regularly open up about their lives. No matter where I’ve worked, I’ve always been dubbed the office “chaplain.” Today I am privileged to serve this calling in private practice as a licensed mental health counselor, Creative Depth Coach, spiritual director, and online educator.

Some things that you might want to know about me:

I believe in the power of awareness to create the possibility for change. And I am good at helping clients feel safe and seen, so that they can engage their stories in an atmosphere of attunement and care.

I know how to make the ancient stories of sacred text come alive meaningfully for my clients in their real-time struggles and joys. I believe these ancient words have power because they continue to speak of our unique purpose and God’s great love for us.

I am passionate about helping people see themselves as creative and experience the transformative power of letting expressive arts be a sacred storyteller.

What I DON’T have is:

a magic wand,

any sure-proof formulas, or

10 easy steps to anything.

Instead, I can offer to walk with you down your individual path to healing. If you are ready to embrace mystery and uncertainty and discover together how your personal story matters, I can offer insight and compassion on the journey. Together we can explore your multi-storied heart, uncover what’s in the way of your authentic freedom, and take steps toward transformation.

In case you’re wondering:

I graduated from Reformed Theological Seminary (Orlando campus) in 2006 with a Master of Arts in Counseling. Previously, I completed four years of coursework toward a degree in English from the University of Maryland (College Park campus, 1975-1979) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communication Studies from the University of Maryland University College (virtual campus, 2003). I completed the coursework for my doctoral studies in Pastoral Counseling at Christ Church, Oxford University (UK).

I’m committed to lifelong learning, which means that I’m always looking for new sources of inspiration, insight & enrichment.

  • In 2019, I became a Certified Creative Depth Coach through Journey Path Institute, which integrates depth work with the expressive arts.

  • I received an Advanced Counseling Certificate from the Allender Center/Seattle School.

  • I am a Certified Facilitator of the Daring Greatly materials developed by Dr. Brené Brown and served for numerous years on her consultant/senior faculty team.

  • I’ve completed Dan Allender’s Effective Trauma Care, Sexual Abuse Recovery, and Sabbath intensives.

  • I am a graduate of Larry Crabb’s School of Spiritual Direction.

  • This list doesn’t even touch on the art and creativity workshops that I’m addicted to taking!

As co-founder of They Make Art University, I work with my husband, Brian, to offer online art education to help beginners and experienced creatives tap into the power of creative expression, build skills, and discover the joys of “art as process.”
